For J.R.R. Tolkien, mapmaking was essential to creating Middle-earth. What began as a linguistic project became one of his most challenging and detailed creative endeavors. Though fantastical, Tolkien’s world is grounded in the landscapes, cultures, and experiences he drew from real life, including his travels and service during World War I. Middle-earth may be imagined, but to Tolkien it carried a deep sense of truth.
